Where and when can I get information on road
closures?
Information on road closures will be available here in the new year, while every address in the postcode areas the routes pass through will be sent (through the post) a full list of road closure locations and times for their area in spring 2024.
How long will roads be closed for?
While road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of everyone taking part in the event, but no area will have road closures on more than one day. The exact length of time a road is closed depends on which event is taking place.
For the Ford RideLondon Classique professional women’s race, temporary road closures will be in place along the route (except the start and finish venues). This means the road is shut shortly before the first riders come through and then reopens after the last riders and support vehicles have passed. This period of closure usually lasts around 30 minutes.
For the start and finish venues, where it is necessary to build infrastructure such as the start and finish gantries and infrastructure for the live TV broadcast, it is necessary for us to close the roads for a longer period of time.
For the Ford RideLondon-Essex challenge rides, we do put in place full road closures, again to ensure the safety of the participants taking part. The length of these road closures depends on the route location. We reopen the roads when it is safe to do so and as soon possible after the last rider has passed.
I need essential access in or out of the road closures (for example to access a carer/hospital/home or for a wedding/special event etc), how can I do that?
If you have a specific need, contact us at ridelondon.co.uk/help/contact-us.
We work with communities to ensure that essential access is possible. We take great care that healthcare, emergency services, businesses or any specific special needs are catered for.
What benefits does Essex get from hosting this event? A partnership between Active Essex and London Marathon Foundation, created in 2022 ahead of the first RideLondon-Essex event, has injected £1.75 million into the county to inspire activity. In 2022, this meant 200 initiatives, sessions and programmes received support from the funding, right across Essex.
The Ford RideLondon Classique is an increasingly prestigious round of a global tour featuring the world’s best riders. It is broadcast on the BBC in the UK and in countries around the world, giving Essex and its tourism industry a huge boost.
Ford RideLondon Essex brings all manner of benefits; many businesses see increased trading on the Event Day and communities come together, creating a celebratory atmosphere and fund-raising opportunities by selling food and drinks to riders.
